Restoration procedure

1. Cost estimate

To initiate the estimate, the vehicle must be shipped to the Porsche Classic Factory Restoration facility. The vehicle is then examined in the Porsche Classic Factory Restoration workshop. In the workshop, our team of experts estimate the cost of restoration as precisely as possible. Each area is estimated separately: engine, transmission, electrical, chassis, bodyshell, paint, and exterior.

2. Disassembly

For a full restoration, the vehicle is completely disassembled and all parts are removed from the bodyshell, from the engine to the interior equipment. This is the only way to clearly determine the condition of the classic vehicle.

3. Engine & transmission

To ensure everything runs smoothly, the function and authenticity of the engine and transmission must be carefully checked. If necessary, they are completely disassembled and cleaned. Defective parts are replaced with genuine parts or parts that were replicated based on original drawings. The original measurement values specified by the factory are used as the basis for the engine settings. Its performance is then measured during a test run on the test stand. The results are documented and displayed in a diagram. In this way, the engine and transmission are restored to their original state – both visually and technically. Porsche Classic also offers customers the option of only restoring the engine and the transmission, so that their classic vehicle runs smoothly again.

4. Body

Craftsmanship throughout: After our specialists have removed the worst corrosion from the bodyshell, they open all the cavities – a necessary step in the preparation for the paint removal bath. The frame is precisely aligned on the straightening bench, using frame gauges for the doors and windows that originate back to the production of what is now a classic. If necessary, experienced mechanics reshape deformed areas. Extremely corroded areas are cut out of the body and replaced with new genuine parts. The “trial assembly” that follows is also a painstaking process. The untreated body is completely assembled on the straightening bench. Gap dimensions and functions (such as shutting of the doors and the engine and luggage compartment lid) are checked and adjusted to the optimum setting. The parts are then removed once more so that they can undergo further professional treatment.

All restoration body work is completed in our Stuttgart workshop. The intercontinental project is fully coordinated by the Porsche Classic Factory Restoration in Atlanta.

5. CDPB and paint finish

Protection and beauty: The classic vehicle has never had it so good, even when it was brand new. Today, the bodyshell gets treated to a cathodic dip painting bath. The CDPB ensures that the primer is evenly applied down to the very last cavity. Epoxy resin dissolved in water produces a conductive paint. When an anode is immersed in the bath, the bodyshell acts as a cathode, generating a direct current. This causes paint particles to adhere evenly and securely to the body and to all cavities, providing a high degree of corrosion protection. The complete paint build-up in the original color now begins. The CDPB and factory re-painting is performed in our Stuttgart facility. The intercontinental project is fully coordinated by the Porsche Classic Factory Restoration in Atlanta.

6. Interior

Where you feel at home: The experts are now ready to openly discuss matters of pure taste. The interior – an affair of the heart. Specialists can treat the interior or completely renovate it using materials of the same high quality as the original materials. Here, your imagination can continue to soar with few boundaries. Our experts will satisfy almost every desire.

7. Completion

Roadworthy: Your classic Porsche is now restored to its original perfection. Just like new. But it is not quite ready to be handed over to its owner. During extended test drives, several experts check the function of the engine and transmission, listen to the wind noise and carefully inspect the chassis and paint. Only at our Atlanta facility do our experts have the ability to utilize our 1.6-mile closed-circuit test track. This ensures your classic’s safety and quality of workmanship. Only when the specialists are completely satisfied is the customer reunited with their valuable companion.
