Sparkling vintage Porsche classics shine in Shanghai stop of China Rally Porsche at Top City Classic Rally China 2016
Shanghai. The final leg of the Top City Classic Rally China 2016 concluded on September 11th as two of Porsche’s most iconic car models – a classic Porsche 911 2.0 from 1966 and a Porsche 911 Carrera from 1998 - finished a journey of 640 kilometers after arriving in Qiandao Lake.
Alexander Klein, Manager Classic Car Collection of Porsche Museum, said “This was a fantastic journey for two of Porsche’s most elegant vintage cars. With more than a 640 kilometers travelled, these iconic cars are a true testament to the value of decades of cutting-edge engineering that give Porsche automobiles a long and hearty lifespan.”
There were more than 30 classic cars participating in this event, which began its second leg with an exhibition of classy cars in Shanghai before travelling to Wuzhen, a small town known for its picturesque stone bridges and finishing in the serene settings surrounding Qiandao Lake.
After a smooth ride in the first leg of the journey from Beijing’s Yanqing to Shangyi in Hebei province between Sept. 1st and 4th, the two classic cars were bestowed with the “Most Popular Brand” and “Most Classic Collection of the Event” awards. Based on their outstanding performances in the second and final leg of the rally in Qiandao Lake, the Porsche 911 2.0 (1966) was awarded the Overall Result Top 1 of all cars entered;while the Porsche 911 Carrera (1998) won “The Performance Car of the Event” and both 911 models received further recognition as “The Legend of the Event”.
With both cars flown in from the Porsche Museum in Stuttgart, Germany, which displays more than 80 celebrated Porsche vehicles, this year’s participants were chosen as models that exemplify the classic sporty DNA of Porsche automobiles.
The Porsche 911 Carrera (1998), which participated in the event last year, offers a truly remarkable sport design. One of the last models to be produced with an air-cooled engine, it maxes out at a staggering top speed of 275 km/h.
The Porsche 911 2.0 (1966) is a Porsche classic in the truest sense of the word. When it was released in the mid-1960s it revolutionized the way many people viewed premium sports vehicles, setting the foundation for the Porsche 911s huge success later on.
Porsche attended last year’s event with a luxury lineup that included a Porsche 356 Speedster, Porsche 911 Carrera Speedster, and Porsche 911 Carrera (1998). The Porsche 356 Speedster stole the show after being awarded the event’s “Classic of the Classics” award, while the Porsche 911 Carrera (1998) won the “Most Collectable” award.
This is the third year that Porsche has participated in Top City Classic Rally China in recent years. As one of the top sports car manufacturers in the world, Porsche is passionate about events such as the Top City Classic Rally, viewing them as a way to spread their excitement for finely engineered automobiles – both classic and cutting-edge – to China’s growing number of car enthusiasts.
