Shanghai/Beijing Porsche held a brand night event themed “A Matter of Character” at Beijing Shougang Park prior to Auto China 2024, where the full lineup of the brand’s latest top-tier sports cars were on show. Among them, the new flagship Taycan Turbo GT and the new all-electric Macan made their debut in China. Eileen Gu, Porsche ambassador, Lars Kern, Porsche’s development and test driver and electric car lap time record breaker at both the Nürburgring Nordschleife and Laguna Seca, alongside Porsche owners, fans, media and opinion leaders gathered at the event for an immersive and all-encompassing experience showcasing Porsche’s commitment to and inheritance of pure sports cars, as well as its understanding and interpretation of modern sporty luxury.
“Porsche has been evolving over the past 75 years but retains its sports car DNA,” said Detlev von Platen, member of the Executive Board of Porsche AG and head of Marketing and Sales. “Whether in the era of the internal combustion engine or the era of electrification, Porsche has always been committed to creating the sportiest models in every segment. At the same time, we incorporate the concept of modern luxury into every detail to respond to consumer needs and bring them an exciting sports car experience.”
The event venue was designed with a “cyber jungle” theme. The new Taycan and all-electric Macan appeared surrounded by lush vegetation to create a unique atmosphere mixing digital fantasy and reality. The dialogue with iFlytek Spark, the AI partner of the brand night event, explored the charm of Porsche’s unique character and visualised its expression on different models. This marked the first time that Porsche has organised a brand night event prior to an A-class auto show, kicking off the annual Auto China automotive event in style.
Authentic sports car: Taycan Turbo GT sets a new benchmark for performance in the era of electrification
The 911 Dakar, 718 GT4 RS, Cayenne Turbo GT and Panamera Turbo E-Hybrid, which respectively represent Porsche’s combustion engine and plug-in hybrid models with strong comprehensive performance, were first to be unveiled at the brand night event, followed by the new flagship model the Taycan Turbo GT – defining true performance in the BEV era.
The Taycan Turbo GT with Weissach Package topped the fastest electric cars list at the Laguna Seca circuit with a lap time of 1:27.87. It also set a new record at the Nürburgring Nordschleife circuit with a lap time of 7:07.55, which was more than 26 seconds faster than the previous lap record set by a Taycan Turbo S with the Performance Package in 2022. This made the Taycan Turbo GT the fastest four-door model at Nürburgring Nordschleife.
With a system power of up to 815 kW, the new flagship Taycan Turbo GT with Weissach Package can accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in just 2.2 seconds. “To prove your mettle on the track, it’s not enough to simply have as much power as possible,” said Lars Kern, the Porsche development and test driver who made the double lap time records in the Taycan Turbo GT with the Weissach package. “The overall package of accelerating and braking, cornering grip, aerodynamics, stability and fine-tuning has to be right. Our new GT cars again clearly raise the bar even higher in terms of driving dynamics.”
The new Taycan now has seven models available for order in the Chinese market, with two body shapes covering sports sedan and Cross Turismo models. On 24 April, the day before the opening of Auto China 2024, the eighth new Taycan derivative – specially tailored to the Chinese market – will be revealed and made open for sale.
Character speaks: The new Macan symbolises the luxury sports SUV in the era of electrification
The new all-electric Macan, which is performance-oriented and completely newly developed based on the PPE platform, also made its China debut at the brand night event. With its characteristic Porsche performance, progressive yet timeless design, long-distance range of up to 784 km (WLTP urban conditions) and high everyday practicality, the new Macan embodies the perfect interpretation of an electric luxury sports SUV, representing Porsche's new stance in the era of electrification.
As the sportiest model in its segment, the new car features a range of cutting-edge technologies including Porsche Active Suspension Management (PASM) with two-valve technology, rear-axle steering, electronically controlled Porsche Traction Management (ePTM) and Porsche Torque Vectoring Plus (PTV Plus). Thanks to its particularly sporty seat position and low centre of gravity, as well as its impressive driving dynamics and steering precision and sustained high-performance output, the new Macan delivers a real sports car feeling.
Eileen Gu, Porsche ambassador, feels the new all-electric Macan makes her character speak. “It not only inherits Porsche’s long-standing dynamic design and outstanding performance, but more importantly offers a wide range of personalised choices. It is also a pioneer in sustainability with net-zero carbon emissions. Being young, urban and electric, it is especially suitable for those who wish to show their own characters. ”
Upgrading local services and driving experience around electric car products
To prepare for the delivery of the new Taycan and the all-electric Macan, Porsche is offering Chinese consumers a more optimised service experience and exclusive services. It ensures a worry-free all-electric car journey with its expanding exclusive charging network covering intercity locations, service stations along intra-city key highways as well as high-end travel destinations, and complemented by compatible third-party charging stations. It provides more local applications and a more convenient travel experience with the newly upgraded Porsche Connect system. It also offers a range of flexible financial solutions such as the 52% residual value commitment within three years to eliminate customer concerns about the residual value of all-electric models. In addition, the newly launched Porsche Service Inclusive provides six years/60,000 kilometers of free maintenance, along with policies for pickup and delivery services, and reimbursements for Porsche courtesy vehicles or taxis. Car owners will also benefit from unlimited roadside and accident assistance, ensuring peace of mind while enjoying their vehicle use.
“The new Taycan and the new all-electric Macan are Porsche’s latest electric car models. We already provide local app stores tailored to Chinese consumers in line with the unique digital ecosystem of the Chinese market,” said Michael Kirsch, President and CEO of Porsche China. “We will continue to engage with the Chinese market to provide consumers with exceptional sports cars and services that exceed their expectations.”
