Porsche extends its Formula E commitmentABB FIA Formula E World Championship

• Commitment includes racing under the new GEN4 regulations from season 13.
• Formula E continues to be highly relevant for road-car development.

Shanghai/Stuttgart. Porsche extends its involvement in the ABB FIA Formula E World Championship. This decision means that the Stuttgart sports car manufacturer will line up on the grid when the next generation of vehicles, known as GEN4, arrives in the all-electric racing series. Featuring part-time all-wheel drive, the regulations throw another technical challenge in terms of road-car development as early as next year (season 11). GEN4, will be introduced in season 13 (2026/2027) and should allow manufacturers even more scope for development, from which they can then gain more insights for their series production.

“Right from the outset, we regarded our Formula E commitment as long-term,” says Michael Steiner, Member of the Executive Board for Research and Development at Porsche AG. “The evolution of racing vehicles shows how much development potential there is in e-mobility. Go-ing forward, we want to glean even more knowledge from Formula E that we can transfer to our roadgoing sports cars. As one of the most competitive series in motor racing, it’s already pushing us to achieve technological excellence. Performance evolution of Formula E vehicles over ten years

Porsche joined the innovative electric racing series at the start of the 2019/2020 season. At that time, second-generation vehicles were fielded, which meant that it was no longer necessary to swap vehicles halfway through the race due to range restrictions. The cars are now in their third generation – achieving up to 350 kW of power, a maximum recuperation of 600 kW and a top speed of over 300 km/h. The upcoming “GEN3 Evo” significantly boosts performance before the next major technological step takes place with GEN4, which aims for a power output of up to 600 kW and a regenerative capacity of up to 700 kW.

Porsche in Formula E

Porsche contests its fifth Formula E season in 2023/2024. In addition to the works-run TAG Heuer Porsche Formula E Team, the American customer outfit Andretti Formula E competes with the Porsche 99X Electric. The concept of the innovative electric racing car was developed at the net CO2-neutral Weissach facility. With its commitment to the world championship, Porsche underlines its commitment to take a leading role among traditional automobile manufacturers in the areas of electrification, sustainability and technology. In Formula E, the brand gains valuable insights for its electric series-production sports cars.

The flames of battle reignite in China after five-year absence

As an important witness to the development of Formula E, China witnessed the first-ever Formula E race in the unique format of street race, which was held in Beijing in September 2014. In the following four seasons, Formula E has traveled to Hong Kong, Sanya, and other places in China to host seven rounds of races. The last time it encountered Chinese fans was in March 2019. Five years later, Formula E will once again set foot on Chinese soil, igniting the Shanghai International Circuit from 25-26 May this weekend. This is also the first time for Formula E event racing in Shanghai.

Right before the race, Porsche China invited over thirty media guests to interact closely with the TAG Heuer Porsche Formula E Team and listen to the team share cutting-edge racing technology. The team's drivers were also present at the event, sharing their racing experiences and insights with the media guests- they talked about how they competed with opponents on the track, how they handle unexpected situations, how to adjust the car's performance, and other practical skills, giving the guests a deeper understanding of electric racing. Through this event, the media guests not only gained a profound understanding of the technical strength and racing culture of the Porsche Formula E Team, but also felt the charm and passion of racing, eagerly anticipating the team and drivers to win the season championship.
