Explore new artistic styles and break the boundaries of diversified visual designsEnsemble from the Future – 2024-2025 Porsche “Young Chinese Artist of the Year” Launch Forum held in Beijing

• Representatives of previous award winners and jury members gathered at the forum to discuss the growth and creative pathways of young Chinese artists;

Shanghai. On 23 May, the 2024-2025 Porsche “Young Chinese Artist of the Year”Launch Forum was officially held at the fifth JINGART festival in Beijing. As co-organisers of the event, Porsche China, Cc Foundation, and ART021 Shanghai Contemporary Art Fair will continue to work together to promote the artistic practice of young Chinese artists and facilitate their cutting-edge exploration and independent expressions. With the theme of “Ensemble from the Future,” the forum discussed the interaction among young creators by focusing on contemporary artistic topics and the boundaries of the future. The forum invited previous award winners Wu Junyong (the first selection) and Wang Yi (the third selection); Dr. Shen Qilan, Member of the Executive Committee, art critic, and curator; Sunny Sun, Director of A4 Art Museum and representative of the jury; Shao Shu, Executive Director of HEM, and Professor Hu Jieming, Dean of the School of New Media Art of the Shanghai Institute of Visual Arts to review the development of the selection and to share insightson the growth journey of young artists.

In today’s increasingly diversified and inclusive social environment, young artists create extensive artistic works with their unique perspectives and ideas. These diversified art forms and creative concepts turn them into musicians with unique timbres and melodies. Their works interact with each other, forming a complex and beautiful ensemble. “Porsche has been committed to discovering and supporting young artists for many years,”said Jojo Tang, Member of the Executive Committee and Vice President Public Relations and Press of Porsche China. “We have built an open communication platform for them to encourage emerging artists to continue to move forward on their path of creative practice. We believe that the future of art is dependent on the exploration and innovation of the younger generation. Their works will become a sign of the times, bringing new inspiration and guiding the development direction for the future. ”

“The annual Porsche ‘Young Chinese Artist of the Year’ has arrived once again,” said Kylie Ying, Member of the Executive Committee and Co-founder of the ART021 Contemporary Art Fair Group, “At each selection, we encounter many fresh faces as well as strong and unique artistic expressions. Art creation is a lonely and lengthy process, and we sincerely hope that through our collective efforts, we can connect these young artists with the outside world, allowing their talents to be discovered by the public and inspiring even more diverse artistic creations. It is particularly noteworthy that the 2024-2025 Porsche ‘Young Chinese Artist of the Year’ awards have received additional support from the Simian Foundation, which is also the highest recognition of our efforts.”

Diversified ideas collide to explore the boundaries of artistic creation

In the roundtable session of the forum, representatives of the award winners and the jury interpreted today’s art diversity from different perspectives and discussed the cutting-edge trends of contemporary art as well as the challenges and opportunities faced by young artists during their creative process. “Young artists have formed an Ensemble from the Future,” said Dr. Shen Qilan, a well-known curator and cultural scholar. “The music of the future is emerging, which encourages everyone to participate in it with their own sounds. Everyone shines in their own way and complements each other. This is what the art of the future will look like.”

Since its inception in 2017, Porsche “Young Chinese Artist of the Year” has nominated more than 60 emerging artists, 13 of which have won awards for their outstanding professional abilities. Wu Junyong, one of the winners of the first event, is known for his versatility in various artistic forms. His works seamlessly blend different historical traditions with modernity, conveying human emotions, conflicts, and desires that transcend time and borders. In this forum, he reflected on his past artistic explorations and practices, hoping that the awards will inspire more young people to embrace innovation and diversity, further fostering the vibrant growth of the art ecosystem.

Wu Junyong stated, "I believe the key factors that influence an artist's career are continuous self-evolution, working within a larger system, external evaluation, and perseverance to the very end. Art is a systematic endeavor that must interact with the outside world. Positive feedback from the external world is an important signal, as it professionally acknowledges the artist's work. Art creation is a lengthy process, especially for those works that maintain a certain distance from the mainstream. To receive external recognition is a blessing."

Wang Yi, the winner of the third selection of the awards, also participated in the forum, sharing his thoughts on societal changes and calling for greater attention and support for young artists from all sectors of society. Wang Yi's works are characterised by their aesthetic tension and abstract significance, often imbued with profound reflections on social relationships and a critical spirit. He emphasised the crucial role of the Porsche "Young Chinese Artist of the Year" in promoting the growth of young artists by providing a professional platform. He discussed how art awards can offer valuable opportunities and resources to young creators, helping them to develop and break through in the early stages of their careers.

"Being one of the twelve finalists was already a great fortune, and winning the award was even more surprising," Wang Yi said. "In my diverse practices, I have always started with painting, which may not always appear 'avant-garde' or 'experimental.' However, painting, sculpture, installation, and architecture share commonalities. For me, structure, shape, and colour are the foundations of all things. In the past, people were not aware of the diversity of my creations because an artist's thinking often requires long-term observation and multi-directional experimentation. Through the ‘Porsche Young Chinese Artist of the Year,' I was able to comprehensively present my practice concepts. This opportunity is incredibly valuable for young artists like me."

Witness growth and development together and open a new chapter of the future with the rest of the world

At the forum, Porsche China also announced that it will work with the ART021 Shanghai Contemporary Art Fair to hold a significant Retrospective Exhibition in the middle of 2024. For the first time, the Retrospective Exhibition will be brought to Hong Kong, the capital of art in Asia, from the mainland. By gathering and displaying new artworks and practical results of the young artists, the exhibition will show the growth path of the young Chinese generation of artists to a global audience. This is not only a review of the past achievements, but also a prospect for future artistic development. The Retrospective Exhibition will show the great development of the selection over the past eight years, giving more people the opportunity to witness the innovative spirit and diversified expressions of young Chinese artists. It will also allow them to compose a more fascinating ensemble on the international art stage.
