A guide to the new Porsche Vision Gran Turismo concept car
Welcome to the future of virtual racing. This is the Porsche Vision Gran Turismo, a concept car produced in collaboration with Polyphony Digital Inc, the Sony company responsible for the Gran Turismo racing game series.Available exclusively in Gran Turismo 7 when it launches on Playstation 4 and 5 on 4 March 2022, this is the first Porsche concept study created for use in a game. Although it’s not the first time a Porsche has featured in Gran Turismo, of course. Some of you will have driven one of the wide range of Porsche models to have appeared in the latest iteration of the Gran Turismo Sport franchise since 2017, the most recent of which being the Taycan Turbo S.What is the Porsche Vision Gran Turismo?Freed from the constraints of creating a production car, the designers at Porsche were given the creative freedom to explore new ideas and concepts. “A vehicle designed purely for the virtual world opens up exciting possibilities for us that are otherwise heavily regimented in a regular design process for a series production car,” explains Michael Mauer, Vice President Style Porsche. “Projects such as the Porsche Vision Gran Turismo are particularly valuable for us in the creative process.”What are some of the Porsche Vision Gran Turismo’s key features? The Porsche Vision Gran Turismo is unmistakably a Porsche, but one that features future-orientated versions of familiar Porsche design elements. Some of the standout design details include the sporty height-to-width ratio, an extremely low-set bonnet and very pronounced wings. At the front, the lights and the integrated air intakes share a similar design language with the Porsche Taycan, while at the rear the narrow light strip is a development of that found on the 911 and Taycan models. What’s the Porsche Vision Gran Turismo’s interior like?Inside, a curved, driver-focused hologram display floats above the steering wheel, while a low set seating position reinforces the car’s sporting credentials. “We spent a long time considering the right material design consisting of carbon and titanium. The aim was to reduce weight while increasing performance,” says Markus Auerbach, Head of Interior Design at Porsche. “In addition, sustainable aspects also play a role in forward-looking projects. For example, we only used entirely vegan materials in the concept car.”What will the Porsche Vision Gran Turismo be like to drive in Gran Turismo 7?A lot of attention has been paid not only to the physics of how the car drives in the game, but how players interact with it. With haptic feedback through the controller, it is designed to mimic the feel that you would get from driving this car in real life. It is also set up to offer fast, direct steering responses – just like you would feel driving a real Porsche on a race track. Why has Porsche and Polyphony Digital collaborated on the Porsche Vision Gran Turismo? For the past eight years, Polyphony Digital has collaborated with several car manufacturers to create one-off Vision Gran Turismo concept cars for the game. Kazunori Yamauchi, President, Polyphony Digital, explains why his company wanted to collaborate with Porsche for Vision Gran Turismo: “The appeal of a Porsche comes from its purist design. And in terms of engineering expertise, both we and Porsche follow the same perfectionist philosophy. We share the same passion for racing and are looking to the future of the car.”Robert Ader, Vice President Marketing at Porsche AG, added: “We can engage young and digital target groups in the place where their automotive dreams are born: the world of gaming. The partnership with Polyphony Digital and Gran Turismo is a perfect fit for Porsche, because motorsport – whether real or virtual – is part of our DNA.”The Porsche Vision Gran Turismo was unveiled at the FIA Certified Online Championship World Finals, an esports tournament based on Gran Turismo SportThe Porsche Vision Gran Turismo’s key performance data0-100km/h 2.1 seconds0-200km/h 5.4 secondsTop speed 350km/hPeak power 820kW (950kW with overboost & launch control)Battery size 87kWhRange 500km (WLTP)Drivetrain all-wheel drive
