A roadtrip around Ireland with the Porsche Travel Experience
Be inspired – just like Porsche was for its iconic colour, Irish Green
Winding mountainous Irish road passes rugged granite rocks
‘A hundred thousand welcomes’ is how the Irish have greeted visitors for centuries. A place whose hospitality, people and roads make you feel at home
Ireland is called The Emerald Isle for good reason. Watered by the wild Atlantic weather systems which make landfall here, there’s green wherever you look when you head out into the Irish countryside, from its rolling hills to the broad expanse of its interlocking fields. We did not know just how awe-inspiring, beguiling and ever-present this colour would be as we headed out on our Porsche Travel Experience Ireland roadtrip. As the participants jumped in their cars and cruised out of Dublin, we were able to pick up speed for the first time, passing down country lanes bathed in a magical light and through villages of cottages, corner shops and, of course, those famous, brightly coloured Irish pubs.

Irish Green is a historic Porsche hue – a favourite of Ferry Porsche, today it is available as a Paint To Sample colour
Exploring the many greens of Ireland on a Porsche roadtripThey say that 40 shades of green await you in Ireland. It feels like we see them all on this trip. And we actually even felt there was a bunch more besides. Emerald Green to Fern Green, Moss Green to Kelly Green – historic Porsche colours all. The island’s unique climate creates this cavalcade of verdant colour. These different types of green – whether appearing on steep cliffs, the leaves of the hedges and trees that line the lanes we drive along or the lush meadows behind them where cattle graze – are so overwhelming in their number that simply placing all of these shades under the singular banner of ‘green’ is far too inadequate.

Head out of the city with Porsche Travel Experience Ireland and you’ll find a country that blooms with colour… although green is in charge
How Irish Green was Ferry Porsche’s favourite colourOf all the greens, Irish Green has perhaps the most special meaning for Porsche. It was first used in 1964 when it appeared on one of the late 356C models. It would become one of Ferry Porsche’s favourite colours, and soon become a popular choice for the new 911. A rich, vibrant hue to match the land from which it took its inspiration. Today, Wolfgang Porsche has continued to be a champion for Irish Green, having owned several cars in his late father’s favourite colour. It was even the colour chosen to adorn the one millionth Porsche in 2017.
Frontage of a traditional Irish pub
The famous pubs of Ireland, with their colourful exteriors, have for centuries offered an inviting atmosphere for locals and travellers alike
In contrast to the greens of nature and white-washed cottages out in the Irish countryside, Ireland’s pubs offer a constant colourful contrast. Often named after their proprietor – or those from the past – they are even more colourful inside as they are outside. A bite to eat in an Irish country pub isn’t something to be rushed. After a Porsche drive that built up our appetites, it’s a chance to take in the local flavours, whether it’s the characters you’ll find chatting away at the bar or in the food itself. For all of us taking part on the Porsche Travel Experience Ireland, discussion turns to how important the colour green is to Ireland. It appears in the tricolour, the nation’s flag. It’s the colour of the shamrock, the three-leaf clover that’s a pervading symbol of Ireland. The shirts of their famed national rugby union team are a vivid green, proud and strong. There’s even the green cabbage, mixed with mashed potato, that’s an ingredient of one of Ireland’s best-known traditional dishes, colcannon. Today, tucking into a big, soothing bowl is tempting – but we still have plenty of driving to do. There’s plenty more of this enchanting green world to explore in a country whose roads and scenery are as welcoming as the people who live here.
