With 2024 a year full of special launches for Porsche, it brought an exciting line-up to the Goodwood Festival of Speed, full of memorable displays and iconic cars taking on the legendary hillclimb
The annual Goodwood Festival of Speed is always high on any car lover’s summer to-do list – and the 2024 edition was no exception. Held in mid-July in the grounds of beautiful Goodwood House in West Sussex on England’s south coast, the annual event brings together the world’s greatest racecars, sportscars and drivers for a show like no other. This year saw special appearances from brand new Porsche cars, iconic race winners and many of the greatest ever sportscars produced by the company over its long and illustrious history. The Porsche stand is always one of the busiest at the Goodwood Festival of Speed and this year was no different. And if you were lucky, you might have seen some famous faces – like Porsche Brand Ambassador and former Formula 1 driver, Mark Webber and five-times 24 Hours of Le Mans winner, Derek Bell.Let’s whisk you off to the English countryside for a collection of the top Porsche highlights from the 2024 Goodwood Festival of Speed.Porsche 911 Carrera GTS hybridThe star of the Porsche show – and one of the most hotly-anticipated cars at the 2024 Goodwood Festival of Speed – was the new hybrid-powered Porsche 911 Carrera GTS. The stunning new sportscar hit the legendary hillclimb in style, emerging from underneath a silk sheet before it bolted straight up the famous Goodwood hillclimb with Mark Webber behind the wheel.Porsche Macan electricThe new Macan electric had pride of place on the Porsche stand – as well as cutting a fine figure when it made its run up the hillclimb. As the latest addition to the Porsche electrified line-up, it mixes sportscar performance with everyday usability and an innovative and high-tech interior. Outside, it maintains classic Porsche proportions but with a sportier and even more dynamic look – a combination which drew admiring glances all weekend.Porsche 911 Carrera RSR Turbo Martini Racing In 2024 Porsche is marking 50 years of the introduction groundbreaking Turbo technology in its roadcars. Having already tasted success with its turbo-charged racecars, like the Porsche 917/30 cars that dominated the Can Am series in 1973, Porsche sought to bring the technology to the 911.One of the most famous examples of the manufacturer’s venture into turbocharged cars was the 1974 911 RSR Turbo – which also happened to be the first turbocharged racecar to compete at Le Mans. That year, four RSR turbo racecars were built and all four of them were dressed in the famous Martini Racing livery. One would eventually place second at the 1974 24 Hours of Le Mans with Gijs van Lennep and Herbert Müller at the wheel. It's yet another prime example of where Porsche motorsport technology and knowhow fed into the development of its roadcars. Five decades on and the 911 RSR Turbo remains a star attraction wherever it goes – as the throng of Porsche fans at the 2024 Goodwood Festival of Speed clustering around it proved.Porsche 936/77The Martini Racing livery made another appearance at the 2024 Goodwood Festival of Speed in the form of the Porsche 963/77 sportscar. The 1977 edition of the 24 Hours of Le Mans was one of the most dramatic races ever recorded – and it was a historic one for Porsche as the 963/77 claimed victory, driven by Jürgen Barth, Hurley Haywood and Jacky Ickx. It’s a racecar that still wows the crowd to this day, as it did when tackling the legendary Goodwood hillclimb in front of thousands of fans.Porsche 918 SpyderThe theme of the 2024 Goodwood Festival of Speed was Horseless to Hybrid – and there are few more celebrated examples of the latter than the Porsche 918 Spyder. Still one of the most remarkable supercars ever made, its lightweight construction and outstanding performance continues to excite petrolheads ten years after it was first unveiled, back in 2014.Porsche 962 CNo Goodwood Festival of Speed is ever complete without an appearance from one of the most successful racecars in Porsche history – the 962. A 962 C claimed back-to-back victories at the 24 Hours of Le Mans in 1986 and 1987, piloted by the illustrious trio of Derek Bell, Al Holbert and Hans-Joachim Stuck. A true Porsche legend.Porsche 911 S/TThe 992 in its purest form, the 911 S/T joined the hillclimb line-up and showed the crowds what it’s capable of. Released in 2023 in a limited run of 1963 units to celebrate the 60th anniversary of the 911, it’s the lightest 992 ever designed for road use (as of July 2024). Perfect for flying up the legendary hillclimb at breathtaking speed, in other words.Porsche Panamera Turbo E-HybridThe third generation of Panamera was represented in style at the 2024 Goodwood Festival of Speed in the form of the Panamera Turbo E-Hybrid, with its fresh, new design and highly efficient and powerful new E-Hybrid engine. It may be a luxurious Porsche sedan, but when tapping into its full power, it’s the epitome of a Festival of Speed sportscar too. The Panamera Turbo E-Hybrid can accelerate from 0-100 km/h (0-62 mph) in just 3.2 seconds and reach a top speed of 315 km/h (196mph).Porsche Taycan Turbo GT with Weissach PackageOne of the cars on the Porsche stand that got the most attention over the 2024 Goodwood Festival of Speed weekend was the new Taycan Turbo GT. When fitted with the Weissach Package, this Nürburgring record-breaking sportscar is currently (as of July 2024) the fastest all-electric production car that Porsche has ever built. It was the perfect companion for that perennial Porsche record breaker – Porsche test driver Lars Kern – to hit the hillclimb with.
