Learn how the new Taycan now charges faster than ever before
A number of improvements and changes to the Taycan means that it charges more quickly than ever. But how fast exactly?
Whether you’re a first-time owner of an electric vehicle or have more experience in running one, knowing how long your car takes to charge is important. Times for how long it takes to charge a car have improved across all brands, as more powerful batteries have been introduced. It’s certainly true of the new Porsche Taycan models, which are not only more efficient than previous models but are quicker to charge too. Let’s find out more. What are the efficiency improvements in the new Taycan? The all-electric Taycan sees a substantial increase in range due to a number of improvements. These include a more efficient, lighter drivetrain, an improved recuperation strategy, reduced drag due to better aerodynamic efficiency, lower rolling resistance of the tyres and a new battery with a higher capacity. These all help influence how often the Taycan needs to be charged. How do you charge a Taycan?Charging the Taycan is a straightforward process. It has two electric charging ports – one on either side – fitted in the front wings of the car. This allows you to open and close the port from the outside with a hand gesture. In the case of the Taycan Turbo GT, this has a single charging port on the passenger side (apart from in the Japan and China markets, where it remains as two). From the interior, they can be opened via the control panel on the centre display. AC charging is possible on both sides, while faster DC charging is possible on the front passenger’s side of the car (so, left-hand drive markets on the right-hand side, right-hand drive markets on the left-hand side).Once the charging port is revealed, you can plug in the charger. An LED light next to the charge port provides information about the current status of the charging process. The new Taycan can charge from 10 to 80 per cent in 18 minutes at an 800-volt DC charging stationDue to technological improvements, like an optimised cell chemistry and better cooling of the battery, the new Taycan not only needs fewer charging stops than the previous generation, the charging process itself is faster too. At 800-volt DC charging stations, for example, it can be charged at up to 320kW – 50kW more than before. As the new Taycan also features greater charging stability, high charging power/output of more than 300kW can be sustained for up to five minutes. Due to the increased efficiency and improved charging performance, journey times are significantly decreased in the new Taycan. It means that the time to charge a Taycan from 10 per cent all the way up to 80 per cent capacity drops to 18 minutes at 800-volt DC charging stations in a best-case scenario, some four minutes quicker than the previous Taycan model. This is despite the fact that net battery capacity in the new car has been increased by 16 per cent. Charging at up to 150kW is possible at 400-volt charging points. The charging time here is around 33 minutes. Great news for your next Porsche road trip. What is the range of a Taycan? The WLTP range of the new Taycan has increased, and now stands at up to 678km (421 miles), depending on body variant and engine. That’s an increase of up to 175km – or 35 per cent – on the previous model. This increased range is down to a number of efficiency measures. Improvements in the drivetrain efficiency and the higher battery capacity are the key factors here. Additionally, the range is increased through optimisations in aerodynamics, rolling resistance as well as mass reduction that result in less driving forces. How to quickly charge your electric Porsche TaycanCharging your all-electric Porsche can be really fast. Get valuable tips on how to maximise charging speed in the video below. These include the recommended battery temperature, charging at a high power DC charging station (270kW or greater), and the importance of a low state of charge at the beginning of the charging process. Find out how the Porsche Charging Planner can make fast charging of the Porsche Taycan even easier, especially when you are driving long distances.
