When was the Porsche Cayenne first launched?Back in 1989, Ferry Porsche himself made a prediction that some saw as bold but was, for him, simply a case of common sense. “If we build an off-road model according to our standards of quality, and it has a Porsche crest on the front, people will buy it,” said the man who founded today’s company. And buy it they definitely have – the Cayenne is one of the biggest-selling Porsche models. The project to design the Cayenne – known as ‘Colorado’ – began life as a joint venture with Volkswagen. It was officially announced in June 1998, with the Cayenne and the Volkswagen Touareg sharing the same platform. To make its new model, Porsche decided to build a brand-new production facility in Leipzig, in the east of Germany. The plant officially opened in August 2002. Known internally as the E1, the first Cayenne was created under head of design Harm Lagaay. When it went on sale that year, it set new standards of performance in the SUV market. The new Porsche Traction Management (PTM) and Porsche Active Suspension Management (PASM) ensured that the Cayenne was fit to handle the powerful engines it was fitted with for impressive performance both on and off road. It proved to be a huge success with customers. The second generation of Cayenne (known as the E2) was launched in 2010, with design elements that gave it an even sportier look, such as a roofline – or flyline – that sloped noticeably toward the rear as well as a lower seating position, while the steering wheel was borrowed from the 911. It also saw the introduction of the first hybrid Porsche to enter series production in the form of the Cayenne S Hybrid, with a plug-in hybrid following in 2014.It’s a forward-thinking electrification strategy that continues to this day in the third generation of the Cayenne (known as the E3 within Porsche). When it went on sale in 2018, the new Cayenne boasted a new interior, updated powertrains and more upgraded features as standard. A thoroughly overhauled version of the third generation of Cayenne then followed in 2023, with big improvements to its chassis, design, engine options and equipment.

What are the different versions of the Porsche Cayenne? The Cayenne has a line-up with a range of different versions distinguished by two body styles and a wide range of engine options. You can choose from the Cayenne or Cayenne Coupé, with the latter possessing an even sportier presence that echoes the silhouette of the 911.In both styles there is the base version, as well as E-Hybrid, S, S E-Hybrid, GTS and Turbo E-Hybrid variants. On sale in certain markets, the Cayenne Turbo E-Hybrid Coupé with GT package can lay claim to offering the best driving performance in the luxury SUV segment and is the top model offering in the range. It can accelerate from 0-100km/h (0-62mph) in 3.6 seconds and can reach a top speed of 305km/h (190mph).

What are the main benefits of the Porsche Cayenne? When the current Porsche Cayenne (model year 2024) was launched, Michael Schätzle, Vice President Product Line Cayenne, described it as undergoing “one of the most extensive product upgrades in the history of Porsche”. Highlights include expanding the range to three drive variants with plug-in hybrid powertrains (Cayenne E-Hybrid, Cayenne S E-Hybrid and Cayenne Turbo E-Hybrid), with a greater battery capacity that increases electric range and even emission-free driving for many everyday trips. The Cayenne also has a new charger that helps increase the AC charging power of E-Hybrid models by up to 11kW, helping lower charge times at suitable power sources to around two hours and 40 minutes. The Cayenne S E-Hybrid and Cayenne Turbo E-Hybrid models both feature new adaptive air suspension technology that significantly increases comfort and driving safety.Visually, the new front end and HD-Matrix LED headlights (standard on the Turbo E-Hybrid models) give the Cayenne an even sportier look. The interior features a driver-oriented cockpit that further emphasises the unique nature of the Cayenne as a sporty SUV. At its heart is the focused new Porsche Driver Experience, whose digital interface helps enhances the drive. A new 10.9-inch passenger display allows the front passenger to access performance data, control the infotainment system and even stream videos, dependent on market (these cannot be viewed by the driver for safety reasons).

When developing the third generation of the Cayenne, prototypes were tested in locations around the world, in different climate zones, to simulate extreme conditions and test the vehicles’ quality and durability. Locations included tough off-road testing in Spain, on Moroccan sand dunes and on ice tracks in Finland. How fast is a Porsche Cayenne? As of June 2024, there are currently 14 different versions of the Porsche Cayenne available (dependent on specific markets), each with different performance specifications.
